“Acolyte” in Greek means “companion,” or “attendant.” At the beginning of worship, acolytes symbolically carry the light of Christ into the sanctuary to remind us of His presence. West Chelmsford UMC recognizes varied abilities within children and has developed a three-tiered system to allow all who desire to participate in acolyting. Acolyte positions depend on age and comfort level.
- Tier One: The responsibility in this tier is to carry in the light of Christ and light the candles on the altar as the service starts. Tier One acolytes will then sit with their parents during the beginning of the service. Then the child goes to Sunday School.
- Tier Two: The responsibilities in this tier include the responsibility from tier one, in addition to helping with the offering plates. Tier Two acolytes will then sit with their parents during the beginning of the service. Then the child goes to Sunday School.
- Tier Three Senior Acolyte: The senior acolyte has all the responsibilities of Tier Two, but sits behind the pulpit during the service and helps to serve communion. The child goes to Sunday School after helping to serve communion.
- If you or your child would like to be considered for an acolyte position, please contact Secretary at office@wcumc.us.
